Dates of the course

September 2012 to September 2013 10 months in person + the possibility of a further 2 months to finish the dissertation (under certain conditions).

Application deadlines

For candidates who have applied for a grant and/or who need an entry visa for Switzerland, applications are open from 15 December 2011 to 20 April 2012.

For other candidates, applications are open from 15 December 2011 to 1 June 2012.

The MAS in Humanitarian Action: Programme Details

The MAS is composed of course work and a research assignment, and is organised in three sections:

  1. A core curriculum of 3 months of intensive course work on the theory and fundamental questions of humanitarianism, including courses on research methodology, carried out during the Swiss autumn semester (September-December).

  2. Two elective courses on a specialist subject of the student's choice.

    These two courses are selected from 6 optional courses, each lasting six weeks. These courses take place during the Swiss spring semester (February-June) and include:

    • Strategic planning and management of humanitarian programmes
    • Communication and advocacy for humanitarian projects
    • Disaster management
    • Health in humanitarian emergencies
    • Legal environment of humanitarian action
    • Human resources management in humanitarian settings

  3. A master dissertation, which is worked on throughout the programme and presented at the end.

A detailed programme will be available in May 2012.
