The new humanitarian paradigm and the complex humanitarian crises that we have witnessed since the early 1990s have changed the context in which humanitarian organisations operate. As a result, the skills, knowledge and competence of a professional humanitarian worker are being transformed and this is creating very specific learning needs.  A number of universities throughout the world have been trying to respond to judge by the growing number of humanitarian education programmes at the level of master, university diploma and university certificate.

The expanding offer in professional humanitarian education is raising a number of questions that need further exploration and discussion, for example: what is the role of universities and humanitarian organizations in professionalizing the humanitarian sector? how should the academic curses be shaped to ensure it fulfils both academic requirements and is relevant to the humanitarian labour market? what education may be offered to national staff and students in humanitarian crisis zones?

The Humanitarian conference Geneva 2010, dedicated to professional humanitarian education, will bring together humanitarian educators, researchers and practitioners to advance reflection, debate and collaboration on needs, perspectives and roles.
